Owner's inscrptn and contemporary and reduced price to ffe but no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,matt,3-colour (pink,black and orange) pictorial artwork by Ivan Lapper,illustrated front panel of dw/dj with white lettering,slightly blemished pink spine withwhite lettering,rear panel with publisher's advert for other crime fiction titles to a white background which is grubbed/marked in several places.With shelf-wear to edges and corners - some minimal creasing,corner tips rubbed with some minimal chipping and losses to same,small closed tears to both top+lower edges,but still approx. 100% present.Top+fore-edges slightly toned and with minimal foxing; contents bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain dark brown cloth(?) bds with bright,crisp,stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip,and clean plain white eps - aforementioned inscrptns excepted.UK,12mo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn,5-159pp [paginated] includes 14 chapters,plus [unpaginated] half-title with precis,and title page.Author's 5th Charmian Daniels,female detective novel. It was a big old violent city where Nell lived,alone since her sister had married and moved away.This city was full of secrets and strange crimes.An unidentified body was discovered not far away from where Nell worked.people said it was dangerous for a young woman to live alone in such a city.Her young friends Annabel and Charlotte thought the house where she lived had its dangers too.
But was Nell alone? Or if she was,in what sense was Nell Alone? Nell had her secrets,and her violence too.
A highly collected and prolific author,and usual offering in her style and will be an important and welcome addition to the Charmian Daniels canon. Gwendoline Butler née Williams,born 19th August 1922 – died 5th January 2013,was a British writer of mystery fiction and romance novels,and since 1956,she also used the pseudonym Jennie Melville.She is credited for inventing the 'woman's police procedural',and is well known for her series of Inspector John Coffin novels as Gwendoline Butler,and by her female detective Charmian Daniels,as Jennie Melville.
n 1956 her John Coffin series of novels began publication under her married name,Gwendoline Butler.Then in 1962,she decided to use her grandmother's name,Jennie Melville as a pseudonym to sign her Charmian Daniels novels.In addition to her modern detective stories (Inspector Winter - Inspector John Coffin,and Charmian Daniels),she also wrote Victorian mystery series, romantic novels,and Gothic stories.
Since April 2013 and again in March 2015,and in this year too, the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering it's prices,weight allowances,dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
